The brand Overland was created in 1903 and was renamed to Willys-Overland in 1909 after John North Willys (1873-1935).
Willys Knight was then founded in 1914 which was the second largest auto manufacturer next to Ford. By 1919 Willys Knight bought out Duesenburgs for the sake of their Elizabeth NJ factory?when ZSB and Chrysler plan a new Chrysler six cylinder car to be introduced by Willys this is the plant they intend to produce it. Because of Willys' financial problems, this plant will be auctioned in 1922 along with the Chrysler prototype?the plant had a sign on it saying it was the home of Chrysler, the Six Cylinder Car?and bought by William C. Durant to be part of Durant Motors. Re-designed, the car debuts as the Flint in 1923 and lasts until 1927.
In 1933 Willys model 77 which was a small car with floating power was introduced was one of the cheapest cars in the US next to the Austin Bantam, and was a successful racing car. Willys Knight then discontinued.
In 1935 John North Willys died of a heart attack in his home.
For the rest of the 30s and 40s Jeep(Willys) built military vehicles & sidecars and started their first civilian vehicles(CJ2A) as well as brought back the Overland name. JeepStation Wagon, Jeepster were also produced in the later 40s.
In the 60s the Jeepster was already disconnued and they came out with the Wagoneer and also released its first V6 engine in the CJs(which was released in 1952 and lasted until 1983).
AMC buys the corp and forms Jeep Corp in 1970 as well as introducing the famous Quadratrac system. AMC/Jeep then releases its first V8 engine in 1972 and brings out the Jeep Cherokee in 1974.
1980s were huge for Chrysler because this is when they bought AMC and Jeep. 1984 the Cherokee XJ introduced, named 4 x 4 of Year by 3 Off Road Magazines. In 1986 the legendary Jeep Wrangler was born and in 1987 Chrysler was a full owner.
Today Jeep is a worldwide Auto Brand and is well known for its capability, military history and longevity. Jeep owners are like family to each other, honking and waving when they pass another jeep driver, stopping to chat in gas stations and parking lots. Not quite sure if there is any other brand that has this kind of relationship and feel.
